The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

THE PLAIN DEALER, MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1985 PEOPLE IN SPORTS UPI Staak dance Wake Forest coach Bob Staak protests an official's call during the Deacons' 62-60 loss to Boston College Saturday. 1 Jazz coach Layden is quick with a quip FROM WIRE REPORTS Utah 'Jazz coach Frank Layden is an elite humorist. His one-liners are in such demand that the club has produced a 17-page booklet of the best of his observations. his rotund frame: "In India, they would worship this His assessment of a player: "His sweat is so rare, it could cure cancer," intelligence: "Computers are smarter than people. Not once have I ever seen one jogging." On why he wore a shirt supporting a bond issue for construction of a new arena in Miami: "It was cheaper and bigger than a billboard." On guard John Stockton: "Talk about Stockton having quick hands.

In my neighborhood, they didn't consider you having quick hands unless you could take the hubcaps off moving On his marriage: "My wife says I'm the kind of man who always hits the nail right on the On eating: "It's strange but I only put on weight in certain places pizza parlors, bakeries, ice cream shops. And lastly: "A man told me if you want to make a small fortune in pro basketball, you start with a large fortune." Shoe course sidelines kicker Colorado State junior place-kicker Steve DeLine is ineligible to play next season because he took a course in shoeing horses in 1981, the NCAA has ruled. DeLine who converted 12 of 19 field-goal attempts this past season," including a 60-yarder earned All-Western Athletic Conference honorable mention honors, and was counting on an even more successful senior season. But the NCAA says his days as an amateur athlete have expired. DeLine, who at the time didn't contemplate attending a university to play football, enrolled in a horseshoeing class at Colorado Mountain College more than four years ago.

The course was taught in a wooden shed just outside Steamboat Springs. DeLine, whose father owns a ranch near Walden, took the course because he believed a young rancher should know how to shoe his own horses. According to NCAA bylaws, however, an athlete has only five years to complete his playing eligibility once he begins college. It makes no difference what school he attends or the reason for attending. The horseshoeing credits are worthless to DeLine at Colorado State: where he enrolled in 1983, and it is doubtful many NCAA schools would recognize the class.

Nonetheless, it means he can't kick for the Rams during his senior season. "Now I'm left completely up in the air, and I hate it." said DeLine when notified of the NCAA decision. "Makes me want to pull my hair out and scream. If you stopped somebody on the street and told them the situation, they'd just laugh." Quotable Garry Maddox, Philadelphia Phillies' outfielder, asked to describe his first grand slam: "A I remember it, the bases were loaded." GLAD YOU ASKED Q- Did Forward Pass ever win the Kentucky Derby? Bob Lamb, Lakewood. '7 A Dancer's Image finished first and Forward Pass second in the 1968 Kentucky Derby, but Dancer's Image was found to have received prohibited medicine.

Several days after the Derby, Forward Pass was declared the winner and his owner received the first -place money and the gold cup trophy.
