He was the owner of the HayLes Farm. Born in North Brookfield, he was a lifelong and a member of Christ Church. He received his degree in mechanical from Worcester Institute in 1940. He was a former chairman of the Board of at the North Brookfield Savings Bank. He was a member and past master of Meridian Sun Lodge of Masons and a past district deputy grand master for the 21st Masonic District.

He was also a member of the York Rite Bodies of Worcester. and a former member of the Melha Temple Shrine. He leaves his wife of 58 years, the former Norma L. Hopkins; a son, Thomas R. of Westfield; a daughter, Natalie H.

During World War II, she sewed military uniforms and was a seamstress for various businesses in Brooklyn, N.Y. Born in Poland, she attended schools there' 'and came to the United States in 1949. She had been a resident of Brooklyn, prior to moving to North Miami Beach, and then to Greenfield last year. She was a Holocaust survivor. Her husband, Max Grabstok, died in 1976.

She leaves two daughters, Jean Conway, with whom she lived Tenenbaum of Canaan, Maine; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. has died after a brief illness. He was 86. Whitaker died May 30 in Oakville, Ontario, near Toronto and received a full regimental funeral on June 4. He twice received the Distinguished Service Order, second to the Victoria Cross among military decorations. The first came when he was a 27-year-old captain of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, which took part in an ill-fated raid on the beach at Dieppe, France, on Aug.

19, 1942. Eventually trapped after fighting into the town plaza, Whitaker pulled his men back to the beach and withstood an enemy onslaught until landing craft managed to rescue the survivors. Whitaker eventually became a brigadier general and won a second DSO for leading his regiment through campaigns in Holland and Germany. Whitaker also was chairman of the Canadian Equestrian Team for 22 years, was chief executive officer of Canada's O'Keefe brewery and was a consultant for a stock brokerage. In the 1980s, he and his wife, Shelagh, began a successful collaboration as authors.

They produced four histories of Canada's. fighting role in Europe. One of them, "Tug of War: the Canadian Victory that Opened Antwerp," won the John W. Dafoe Whitaker was named a member of the Order of Canada in 1990 and appointed an officer of the French Legion of Honor in 1995.
